Canal-top solar power plant, Gujarat, Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL), Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL)

What do you get when the Rooftop Solar Powers and Water join forces?

One would imagine that solar power plants require a vast area of land to install. But did you know that Gujarat has India’s first canal-top solar power plant already in operation. Implemented over Sanand Branch Canal of the Sardar Sarovar Project, it was developed by Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) with support from the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL)

Here are some finer points about the first 1 MW of the Canal-top Solar Power Project:

  1. Implemented in 2012, this was the first canal-top project in India. Post this, other canal-top plants, such as a 10MW plant in Vadodara in Gujarat and a 1MW plant in Karnataka, have been setup
  2. The project not only generates electricity but also helps prevent evaporation of water from the canal
  3. It generates around 1.6 million units per year and saves evaporation of around 90 lakh litres of water
  4. Due to the water underneath, the panels remain 10% cooler compared to ground mounted plants which increases their efficiency

Isn’t this truly a Groundbreaking blend of Jal Shakti with Urja Shakti? Well, we recommend an equally groundbreaking blend of your rooftop with ZunRoof 🙂
