Solar Water Coolers Instated In Indian Railway Stations

In a new first for the Indian Railways, water coolers, bolstered by the solar energy were instated in some of the stations across the nation. This new initiative by the Centre is to promote the Indian Railways’ penetrance into natural resources and their try to spread green networks throughout stations. As compared to the electric water coolers, these solar coolers, with the utilization of solar energy will require zero maintenance and zero bills. R. Badri Narayan, Additional General, Central Railways, in an interview with Mid-Day, said, “the solar water coolers are conceptualized and successfully commissioned by the electrical department of the Mumbai Division of Central Railway (CR) zone.”

The natural water cooler runs on solar energy which in turn gets bolstered by heat transfer when water is passed through the copper coils, surrounded by a cooling fabric.  There is a water dripping system situated in the flowthrough, where the cooling system becomes active. Through the process of conduction, the water inside the coil gets cooled due to the natural evaporation system. This presence of copper coils will provide health benefits as copper kills bacteria and viruses. In addition to the aforementioned amazing tactic of copper, it can also help in the regulation of thyroid glands, with weight-loss feature chipping in as well.

Shivaji Sutar, Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer, in an altercation with the financial express, stated, “An electrical water cooler used to consume 1,620 kWh power and this one consumes zero kwh. Copper tubes ensure that each drop gets natural minerals. When the weather is 35 degrees Celsius, the temperature of the water will be over 10 degrees below, to 25 degrees Celsius naturally. As the cooling mechanism works on solar power, it is 100 % safe and cost-effective”.

Solar coolers were first installed on an experimental basis at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Asangaon stations in the year 2018. These solar-powered natural coolers were now expanded and also installed in Roha, Apta, Pen, Neral and Talegaon station of the Pune Region.
