MNRE to Rajya Sabha: India’s Rooftop Solar Power System capacity crossed 12GW during last fiscal!

India is making its mark in the clean energy market. As planned by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, India crossed 12 GW cumulative solar capacity in the last fiscal. This was stated in a written reply to Rajya Sabha on April 10 by New & Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal. It is a significant growth of about 90% from the capacity of 6,763 MW in 2015-16.

Solar power capacity in India:

  1. The total cumulative capacity was 1,686 MW in year 2012-13 which grew to 2,632 MW in 2013-14 and to 3,744 MW in 2014-15. The country has a total solar power potential of 748GW, New & Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal stated in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.
  2. The three major contributing states Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. Andhra Pradesh topped the chart with 1,867 MW. Rajasthan with 1,812 MW and Tamil Nadu with about 1,691 MW are second and third respectively.
  3. The Minister said that in the government’s submission to the UN Frame Work Convention, India will achieve 40% cumulative electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel based energy resources by 2030
  4. Finally, India plans to add 5,000 MW solar rooftop systems and 10,000 MW large scale projects in current fiscal
