Reading Your Electricity Bill: BSES Delhi

Many of us have been paying our electricity bills for many years, yet we, either never bother to read and understand our bill or find it challenging to really comprehend our electricity bills from the power distribution companies. With too much information, complex structure and numerous electrical jargons on an electricity bill, reading it, is indeed quite difficult. 

But why do we really need to read your electricity bill?

We can just pay off the bill amount? Why bother reading the whole bill?

Well, electricity bills have become the talk of the town as many of the countrymen across different states in the country have been handed over exorbitant electricity bills after the lockdown. People are in shock and finding it hard to understand their electricity bill. 

Owing to the query of many customers, we have decided to do a blog series, ‘Reading Your Electricity Bill’. In today’s edition, we will understand reading the bill of BSES in Delhi. 

BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL)

BSES issues bill under the name BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL)  to an area spread over 750 sq. km with a customer density of ~3100 per sq km. It’s over ~2.4 million customers are spread in 21 districts across South and West areas in Delhi including Alaknanda, Dwarka, Hauz Khas, Jaffarpur, Janak Puri, Khanpur, Mundka, Najafgarh, Nangloi, Nehru Place, Nizamuddin, Palam, Punjabi Bagh, R.K. Puram, Saket, Sarita Vihar, Tagore Garden, Vasant Kunj, Vikas Puri, Uttam Nagar & Mohan Garden.

Different Sections of BSES Bill

Every electricity bill gives out information on your connection, your reading, your due bill amount and your last bill payment.

Personal & Connection Details

BSES bill starts with the section having your personal details. This section also contains information about your connection such as; name, billing address, contact details, billing date and month, your CA number, MDI (maximum demand indicator), sanctioned load, meter number, supply type, meter type and bill basis.

Consumers also receive information about their bill amount through text messages on their number on the bill. In fact, e-bills are also sent to the registered email ids of the consumers. Other than that, your bill basis is also mentioned. Make sure it is ‘actually’ and not provisional.

Meter Details

The next second contains information about your meter and meter reading. Details like meter number, current and previous months billing readings,  number of units consumed and number of billing days.

Billing Details

This section makes the bill transparent by giving out detail about the billing of the current month. Apart from fixed charges, this section has slab wise readings with unit and amount, surcharge, electricity tax, refund, last payment surcharge and the total payable charge, all these are mentioned in detail. Once you know all the details, you can yourself calculate and verify your electricity bill. Additionally, any rebate or concession given on your bill is also mentioned here.

Payment Detail

The next section tells you about the payment details such as total bill payable amount and due payment date. If the bill is paid after the due payment date, late payment surcharge is added to the next month’s bill. People usually do not pay much attention to this important selection of the bill and end up paying more as they keep on delaying paying their bill payment.

Security Deposit Detail

This section at the bottom gives out the detail of your security deposit with the BSES. This deposit is collected by the discom for the connection. BSES give interest at the minimum interest rate on the security amount deposited. This is included and compensated in the first bill of every new financial year. 

Payment Slip

This section as the very bottom is a computer-generated payment which you get if you pay the bill offline. It also has information for paying the bill through cheque or DD.

Apart from the details, the bill also has a customer support number. Consumers from Delhi can use the number given on the top of the bill to ask any query or register their complaints.
