Prices of Different Types of Solar Panels

Every other person who comes to know about solar panels for the first time has this exact question in mind.

‘What is the price?’

And, then the next question that strikes is- what are the different types of solar panels?

So, we have put the answers to both the questions together. We have created this post on the price of different types of solar panels.

The price of a solar panel depends on two prime factors; efficiency and type.

However, we have written this post on the prices of solar panels with a type-prism.

Before we go further, a small note: almost all solar panels are made up of silicon, which is the second most abundant element in the Earth’s crust after oxygen.

Now, the prices of different types of solar panels:

Price of Mono-Crystalline Solar Panels

Typically converting around 15% of the sun’s energy into electricity, mono-crystalline solar panels are the most efficient panels. These are made using cells sliced from a single cylindrical crystal of silicon. Due to a complex manufacturing process, monocrystalline panels are slightly costlier than other panels. They have curved edges and are dark in colour. The facts that these occupy lesser space, makes them have higher power output and long durability, hence, the higher is justified.

In India, these are available up to 20% efficiency. And the price ranges from ₹40 to ₹60 per watt depending on the maximum power such as 50 watts, 250 watts, 300 watts and so forth.

Price of Poly-Crystalline Solar Panels

Polycrystalline silicon cells are made from cells cut from a block of melted and recrystallised silicon. Their outer structure has square cells and they are blue in colour. They are cheaper than mono-crystalline solar panels because they occupy more space to generate the same amount of energy. Also, they have lower efficiency and a shorter life span.

It is cheaper to produce poly-crystalline, due to the simpler manufacturing process, but they tend to be slightly less efficient, with average efficiencies of around 13% and maximum up to 17%.

In India, these are available for a price between ₹45 to ₹75 per watt.

Price of Thin-film Solar Panels

Thin-film solar cells (TFSCs) are the second-generation solar cells that have multiple thin-film layers of photovoltaic or PV materials. This is the reason why thin-film solar cells are also known as “Thin-film Photovoltaic Cell.” Materials such as cadmium telluride (CdTe) and copper indium diselenide (CIS) are used for such PV modules. The attraction of these technologies is that they can be manufactured by relatively inexpensive industrial processes. And, in comparison to the crystalline cells, thin-films are more flexible and lighter in weight. They come with a maximum efficiency of 15%.

In India,  these are priced at ₹30 to ₹55 per watt.

With so many new technologies coming on the field, the prices of solar panels keep on changing. Further, the solar incentives and subsidies and the solar policies of the government, alter the prices, every now and then.
