India is accelerating in its pursuit to become the world’s largest solar power. The amount of solar energy it generates has never been higher before. The Central Electricity Authority of India reported that country generated a total of 1.35 billion kWh of electricity in February 2017. This is the first time ever when India’s monthly solar power generation exceeded the 1 billion kWh mark. Compared to the same month last year, this year’s power generation was 80% higher. Moreover, the overall power generation capacity from renewable energy spectrum increased only 17%.
How did India cross the 1 Billion kWh solar power per month mark:
Currently, the southern states house some of the biggest solar parks in the world. India’s southern region saw steep increase in the installed solar capacity previous year. Many projects in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka have been commissioned in the past few months. These states saw an increase from 175 million kWh in February 2016 to nearly 649 million kWh in February 2017. Tamil Nadu reported a total of 173% increase in power generation. This can be the reason behind India’s sudden power surge.
According to the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, India doubled its solar capacity this year crossing the 12 GW mark. Also, we have a total of 14 GW of solar power projects that are currently under construction. According to a recent forecast, India will surpass Japan to become the third-largest solar power market in the world this year. Solar power generation in India is set to increase at an even more rapid pace as the country is expected to add a record amount of capacity over the next few months. At this speed India’s solar power generation capacity will most probably surpass the 20 GW mark in the next 15 months.
