Annual Turnover For Global Off-Grid Solar Energy Industry Reaches $1.75Bn

With 420 million users and on a path for more growth, the off-grid solar energy turnover has now crossed the 1.75 Bn mark globally, with emphasis on providing lightning and other energy services in rural areas.

Around 1,250 participants from 75 countries attended this year’s Global Off-Grid Solar Forum and Expo (GOGSFE) in Nairobi, Kenya. The event was hosted by the Honourable President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta. The main purpose of the event was to inculcate collaboration and provide investments in the solar sector. According to the estimated reports by Gogla and World Bank Forum, around 840 million people are currently living without electricity and an estimated 1 billion people( especially South Asia and Africa) are living with weak grid connections.

The 2020 Market Trends report has said that the off-grid solar industry has gained tremendous grounds as far as providing a renewable source of electricity is concerned. Revenues and Investments in the solar industry have shown a growth rate of 30 percent from 2017.  Talking on the basis of quantity, around 180 million off-grid solar units have been sold worldwide with the sector reaching $1.5Bn, only in investments. GOGLA, which came to the fore in 2012, had announced a collaboration with the leading solar companies in and around the world. The collaboration created “SDG7” report, which is also known as the Sustainable Development Goal 7. The collab has promised to reach 840 million people globally and provide them access to clean, affordable and reliable energy by the year 2030.

According to GOGLA’s Executive Director, Mr.Koen Peters, “It was a privilege to listen to President Kenyatta’s inspiring speech, encouraging other countries to follow Kenya’s lead in adopting the right policies to scale the off-grid solar market. The massive turnout of this year’s Forum is a testament to the impressive growth of the sector. The new partnerships and deals forged this week will help the industry reach millions of additional households.”

Trends, in the market, have demonstrated that new upcoming ventures are now moving into new regions providing sunlight. These companies have now shifted towards larger, higher-margin solar home system sales in order to meet growing consumer demands for the app-based systems.
